Ruston, Louisiana (KARD/KTVE) — The Jim Taylor Ford-sponsored Bulldog Blitz this week in Ruston is centered on the start of spring practice and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs’ return to the gridiron under a new head coach. After a poor season, the Bulldogs are eager for the outcomes that will inevitably materialize in due course, according to Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie. The team has been preparing for the postseason since late fall. Our first day of spring practice was full of determination and intensity. I believe that our football team is simply much more composed and self-assured. On the field, you can see that our personnel has changed significantly from the previous season. Given the depth of our safeties, defensive line, and linebackers, I believe that defensively we performed admirably from the start, stated Cumbie. An obvious elephant in the room was the widespread speculation that, with Hank Bachmeier, the starting quarterback from the previous season, leaving for Wake Forest, Louisiana Tech quarterback Jack Turner would be the front-runner for the starting position come fall.Jack has done a fantastic job leading this team, in my opinion. If you were to ask our guys who they believe is our football team’s best leader, I believe they would all say him. Now, we have to consistently perform it out here on the field, added Cumbie. Turner indicated that his choice to return was largely motivated by unresolved issues that were bothering him. He had the option to leave the Bulldogs hanging and head off to start for another team.
