Following a successful season at Coventry City, Ben Sheaf is attracting a lot of transfer interest heading into the summer window.
With Gus Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres both moved for large sums of money last summer, the Englishman appears to be the next in line for a major deal away from CBS Arena. Now that Coventry has failed to reach the play-offs and hence will not have a chance of promotion to the Premier League, the Sky Blues may under pressure to retain their midfielder.
This summer, three clubs have been linked with Sheaf, two of which will participate in the Premier League next season.
According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, Fulham and Ipswich are both interested in Sheaf moving into the summer. Nixon reports that Ipswich Town are trying to boost their squad after gaining promotion to the Premier League, and that Fulham’s senior scout recently watched Sheaf, however he emphasizes that he is only one of several players being evaluated by the West London club.
Interestingly, Luton Town were also linked, regardless of which division they would have competed in. Mathematically, they have not yet been relegated from the Premier League, but they must overcome a three-point deficit and a massive goal swing in order to survive, which is almost impossible. Nixon claims that Coventry’s asking price for Sheaf will be around £10 million.
With that in mind, we wanted to hear Coventry City supporters’ opinions and sentiments about the Sheaf news. To get some insight into this, we chatted with FLW’s Coventry City fan commentator Neil Littewood and asked him what price Coventry should be placing on Sheaf this summer. Neil’s estimate is significantly higher than the earlier Nixon study predicted the Sky Blues would want, but his reasoning are certainly true.
“Ben Sheaf – for me, he’s the best central midfielder in the Championship,” Neil stated to FLW. “As a number eight, he controls the game; he’s eager to take the ball in tight situations and pass. He proved against Wolves and Manchester United that he is a Premier League player in all except name.”I believe he should learn from Gus Hamer’s experience and approach cautiously. With all due respect to Luton and Ipswich, I believe they may have problems next year, and Sheaf does not need to be engaged.
