Former Viking Quits One of those men was wide receiver Albert Wilson, who spent three months with the Vikings in 2022. Wilson is now calling it quits.
24/7 Sports’ Ben Moore tweeted on Saturday, “Former Georgia State star wide receiver Albert Wilson has announced his retirement from the NFL. As an undrafted free agent, AW2 signed with the Chiefs after previously playing with the Dolphins, Raiders, and Vikings. Congratulations to my friend, Albert Wilson!”
Wilson, 31, has finished his nine-year NFL career. Here was his NFL resume:
Wilson joined the Vikings at the end of May 2022, when negotiations between incumbent WR and punt returner Dede Westbrook fell through. Early on, the ex-Miami Dolphin was rumored to play WR5 and on special teams, but those predictions proved incorrect. He was terminated on August 22nd, 2022.
On the first summer depth chart release in 2022, Wilson appeared to be in WR9 or WR10 territory, a significant drop for a man who was previously used as WR3 on other NFL teams. While the Vikings could have kept up to 6-7 wide receivers on the active roster, there simply wasn’t enough room for nine or ten players at the position.
Wilson played his first four seasons in Kansas City during the Alex Smith era, and the last three with different quarterbacks in Miami. In 89 career games, Wilson had 218 receptions for 2,499 yards and 12 touchdowns. Wilson occasionally returned kicks. At Georgia State, Wilson was a machine. He caught passes, returned kicks and punts, and finished his collegiate career with 6,235 yards, ranking him among the top 30. Wilson was an undrafted free agent when the Chiefs signed him in 2014.
He was at his pinnacle of power in 2017, the year before Patrick Mahomes officially took over, with 554 receiving yards on 62 targets.
Wilson’s expected WR4 or WR5 role with the Vikings that season was filled by Jalen Reagor and Jalen Nailor. He later joined the Raiders’ roster but appeared in none of the team’s regular-season games in 2022. Wilson faced the Vikings once in his career, in 2014, while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. Minnesota won the game, dropping Kansas City to 1-5 that October. The Chiefs won ten consecutive games following that.
