The Philadelphia Phillies have been looking for a possible successor for Craig Kimbrel during the winter after he left in free agency. After all, All-Star closers don’t exactly fall from the sky.

Therecent rumors that Philadelphia is interested in Boston Red Sox player Kenley Jansen begun to excite Phillies supporters. For more than ten years, Jansen has been among the top closers in baseball, making him an ideal Kimbrel substitute.

Unfortunatelyfor the Phillies, on Monday’s episode of “Fair Territory,” MLB insider Ken Rosenthal completely refuted such reports.

Regretfully, Jansen isn’t a particularly desirable trading asset. With a $16 million salary guaranteed for 2024, he is one of the most paid relievers in the league at 36 years old. Also, he will be a free agent in the upcoming summer, thus his stay will probably only be one year.

Teams aren’t exactly prepared to give up valuable prospect capital in a trade for a player like him.

The Red Sox have spent a large portion of the offseason shopping Jansen, but given the lack of interest they’ve had from Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Dodgers, they might be stuck with him.
Dave Dombrowski doesn’t seem to be interested in making bold deals at this point in the offseason, with Spring Training soon to start, even if the Phillies could use him.

Given that Boston is once again expected to finish last in the AL East, the Sox will probably attempt to trade Jansen before the Trade Deadline, when his contract will be less expensive. That might be the right moment to act if Philadelphia still needs a reliable closer for the final stretch.
