Tom Telesco has been asked by the Las Vegas Raiders fan base to acquire a cornerback. The Raiders added Darnay Holmes, who was recently released by the New York Giants, following roster movement at the position. With over 1156 snaps, Holmes has spent the majority of his career playing in the slot, according to PFF. It is positioned behind Nate Hobbs, who is out but expected back in Week 1. When he was drafted, Holmes was aware that Patrick Graham would work well in his defense.
Also, Holmes has ties to Antonio Pierce from his younger days in California. Pierce was the coach for Long Beach Poly High School when Holmes was suiting up for High School football. He spoke about his relationship during his latest press conference.
“I’ll actually even go further than that, I’ve known Darnay [Holmes] since he was 13. I coached him on the 7-on-7 team when he was a freshman. I know his father, I know his family well, followed him throughout his career, spoke to him throughout this college process. So, Patrick [Graham] was very familiar with him. And you look through that 53-man roster, I know everybody saw our roster like, okay, you’re all set and done. But it’s always about getting better, and that was a great opportunity.
With Holmes in the fold, the Raiders now have a little more depth in the secondary. They could add more cornerbacks with another week into the start in a week. We will see what Telesco does but Holmes is a good addition for depth.
