GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan: Ben Newsted, the owner of Boomtown Records, a brand-new record store that debuted late last month in Grand Rapids’ Creston Neighborhood, takes great satisfaction in offering a wide variety of CDs across several genres. Inside the store at 1809 Plainfield Ave. NE, customers may find thousands of records ranging from hip-hop and electronic to rock, country, and blues.

Music has always been a big part of my life,” said Newsted, 42. “I’ve been a record collector for 24 years now. People love records, and I love being able to distribute what people want.”
Newsted, who has earned his living driving Uber and selling retro video games online, credits his uncle, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, with helping inspire his love of music and records.
He remembers seeing his first Metallica concert with his parents at age seven (he’s seen them about a dozen times now) at Val-du Lakes Amphitheatre, and at Christmas his uncle often gave him records as gifts.
That expanded my musical palette,” Newsted said, recalling his uncle’s gifts, which included Weezer’s Blue Album, The Verve’s Urban Hymns and Beastie Boys Anthology. “I wouldn’t have listened to that stuff for years to come if it wasn’t for him.”
Inside the store, where albums from The Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash and others decorate the walls, Newstead says his collection includes records for sale at all price points, including many under $10. But one thing that he says makes his shop stand out is his “collectors” records.
He counts a “near mint condition” of the Jamaican release of Bob Marley’s 1978 album Kaya, which he’s selling for $89.99. Another prized record in his collection is the U.K. release of the 1989 debut album from the hip-hop group De La Soul. He’s selling it for $99.99.
It’s very hard to find these old records in near mint condition,” he said.
