Former Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith has helped New Zealand win the OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) Nations Cup as they beat Vanuatu 3-0 in the final.

The 34-year-old played in all but one of the All Whites’ group stage matches as they easily defeated Tahiti 5-0 in the semifinals to get to the championship match.

After his brief tenure at Macarthur FC ended last month, he signed with Auckland FC, a new A-League team. He had departed English football after his contract with League Two side MK Dons was terminated by mutual consent in February.

As Auckland gets ready for their inaugural A-League season, he will play club football for the first time in New Zealand. After going through the Town’s system, Smith made over 250 appearances for the Blues in all, scoring 23 goals. In 2018, he left the team to play for the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer.

He spent two years in America before coming back to play for three seasons at Colchester United and a brief stint at Sunderland.
