OU flashback: Sooners demolish Texas 63-14 on this day in 2000″ OU scored seven rushing touchdowns while posting season highs for rushing” Venable might turn the hands of clock again…

24 years ago, the 10th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners scored arguably the most dominant victory in the storied series’ 95-year history with a 63-14 ambush of 11th-ranked Texas.

OU scored seven rushing touchdowns while posting season highs for rushing (245) and rushing attempts (56).

Meanwhile, the defense all but eliminated UT’s ground game (minus seven yards). Four of the Longhorns’ first five possessions were three downs and out. The Sooners forced three turnovers — two interceptions including linebacker Rocky Calmus’ 41-yard touchdown return — and had five sacks.

Just for perspective, the Sooners were held to 15 yards rushing while yielding the most yards total offense (553) in series history in the 38-28 loss to UT in 1999.

Oklahoma’s 63 points were, at the time, the most it has ever scored against Texas — or for that matter a ranked opponent. It was the most lopsided victory over Texas since the series was moved to Dallas in 1929.

Other series records included gaining 534 yards of total offense (previous was 508 in 1973), holding Texas to minus seven yards rushing (the previous low was 17 in 1985), getting 28 first downs (previous was 27 in 1993), and outgaining Texas by 380 yards in total offense (previous was 334 in 1956).

Running back Quentin Griffin got into the act big time. He scored six touchdowns, breaking the school record of five set by Steve Owens (vs. Nebraska in 1968) and Jerald Moore (vs. Oklahoma State in 1994). The sophomore ran for 87 yards on 23 carries.

“We weren’t here to set any record or any of that,” Stoops said. “We just wanted to keep playing well for 60 minutes and see what happens at the end.”
