NRL LIVE: Best coach I’ve had’ hands down” Eels new comer get real about high quality Parramatta charger hero” that convinced him’ for his Eels move..

Incoming Eels star Zac Lomax has revealed his decision to leave the Dragons was made well in advance of the 2024 season kicking off.

Back in April, Lomax signed a four year deal with Parramatta, ending his time at the Red V despite his contract running through until 2026, with Shane Flanagan’s decision to move him to the wing believed to be a key factor behind his decision.

Speaking to Triple M, Lomax explained his decision was made “before a ball was kicked.”

“I knew I wasn’t going to be there (St George) but (for) me personally… I just try and keep my head down and train as hard as I can,” he said.

“Each game (I was) just trying to compete on everything.

“That was my plan knowing what was going to happen and knowing that I’d signed with the Eels. I didn’t want to let my teammates down. That’s not what I’m about.”

Speaking of his new employers, Lomax noted “they didn’t have the season that they’d hoped” but believes the move is “a good test for myself.”

“I just wanted to change.”

Despite his reluctance to move out of his preferred position of centre, 2024 was a career year for Lomax, who starred in the Blues’ Origin win and was named in the Dally M Team of the Year on the wing.

In 21 games this year the 25-year-old scored 14 tries while averaging 153 run metres per game. He also finished as the NRL’s seventh-highest points scorer with 186.

Lomax worked under newly appointed Broncos coach Michael Maguire while in Blues camp this year and the outside back couldn’t have praised the 50-year-old any higher.

“Madge was unbelievable. He’s the best coach I’ve had, hands down,” he said.

“I absolutely loved every second of it.

“Madge, the best thing about him is he’s a good fella. He knows what the team needed.

“His job… he just wanted to bring everyone together. The way he went about it was unbelievable. It’s the best thing I’ve seen.

“He deserves every success that goes his way.

“I wish I could be nearer to the action, but it also kind of depends on where I am playing. Determining if I’m sticking out is difficult.
