Present Detroit Lions defender Carlton Davis III is perhaps the NFL cornerback most acquainted with the Buccaneers’ dynamic combo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The Lions cornerback, who was traded from the Bucs this offseason, faced those wide outs every day in practice for the first six years of his career.
This week, as he prepares to face his former team, Davis is doing everything he can to prepare his new teammates for the formidable task.
He’s normally a quiet guy, but he gave the best introduction of those receivers that I’ve ever heard a DB talk ever in my coaching career, and that’s saying a lot,” defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn said on Thursday. “The way he articulated how these guys are, how they act, how they operate was pretty amazing yesterday. I wish I actually (had) taped that just for my own, just so I could show other players that this is how you do it.”
The Lions could use all the help they could get. Detroit’s secondary is filled with young players. Terrion Arnold is in his first year, while safeties Brian Branch (Year 2) and Kerby Joseph (Year 3) are still on their rookie contracts, as well.
Detroit has some familiarity with these receivers, having played them twice last year. But they did not do much of a job containing them. In Game 1, Godwin and Evans combined for 10 catches and 126 yards. But in the playoffs, Evans went off for eight catches and 147 yards on his own, with Godwin throwing in 40 yards of his own.
On Wednesday, Davis delivered his own scouting report of what makes Evans so dangerous, despite turning 31 last month. “He simply has excellent body control. The way he tackles the game and his thinking are different,” Davis remarked. He has consistently been a key player and a facilitator. has always been a reliable person.
Obviously, you’d expect this game to mean a little more for Davis. Getting traded away from a team you spent six years with can be both shocking and insulting. Publicly, though, Davis says nothing about this week is personal.
