“Was available” | The shocking reason West Ham chose not to sign Depay…..

There’s one reason West Ham did not sign Memphis Depay this Summer, and it may infuriate some fans.

Despite signing Niclas Fullkrug, it still feels like the striker position is one West Ham could improve upon. Although the German hasn’t hit the ground running, it’s more the backup options which are a concern.

Though there is no doubting that Michail Antonio is a club legend, he is far past his prime and isn’t able to start as many games as he once could for the Hammers. Conversely, Danny Ings has never been able to find his form in claret and blue. It follows that West Ham’s consideration of adding another forward in addition to the German should come as no surprise.

While several other candidates were taken into consideration, Memphis Depay is said to have stood out the most by GIVEMESPORT. Prior to joining Brazilian team Corinthians, the Dutchman was available on a free transfer; however, the Irons chose not to forward with the transaction due to Danny Ings.

Unfortunately, Ings is on wages that are well above what he has ever been worth, making him one of the highest earners at the club. As a result, it’s no surprise that the Englishman refused to move elsewhere as he would likely have to take a pay cut.

Ultimately though, there’s a reason why Depay ended up moving to Brazil instead of a team in Europe. Hopefully Danny Ings is able to prove everyone wrong and show that he wanted to stay at the London Stadium for footballing reasons rather than just the money.
