The Atlanta Braves have had some struggles with the offense this season. Atlanta has scored only three runs in all but one of their last seven games, somehow going 5-2 in those contests which is not a normal win total when you’re offensively limited.
Tonight might be a bit different. The Braves, shuffling the lineup without the services of Michael Harris II (hand), installed second baseman Whit Merrifield at the top of the lineup. The hope was that the big bats of Jorge Soler, Marcell Ozuna, and Matt Olson could drive the speedy infielder in. That’s exactly what happened.
Merrifield singled to open the game against Minnesota Twins starter Bailey Ober, advancing to second base on a Jorge Soler walk and then scoring on a Marcell Ozuna single. (That was Ozuna’s 95th RBI, breaking a tie with Shohei Ohtani for the league lead.) But that was just the appetizer, the amuse bouche to Matt Olson’s entree: A three-run BOMB.
Olson took Ober deep, launching a cutter to right-center at 102.6 off the bat and 423 feet, staking the Braves to a four-run lead before an out was recorded.
Atlanta would go on to have an ever better inning in the next frame, putting up five more runs thanks to the top of the order…again. After Whit Merrifield doubled with two outs to get in scoring position, Jorge Soler drew yet another walk. Marcell Ozuna drove in Merrifield with a double, Olson drove them both in with a double of his own, and then Travis d’Arnaud came to bat.
The catcher’s 14th homer of the season scored two more, pushing Atlanta’s lead to 7-1 and seemingly making this one an insurmountable lead. But then, Mother Nature intervened. A rain delay started just moments after the third out of the inning, with the grounds crew covering the field with the tarp as rain started to fall pretty heavily. Both dugouts cleared, with the Braves broadcast crew dropping out to the rain delay programming.
