Following its discovery on the pavement on Saturday morning, the body is being investigated by the Major Crime Section of the London Police Service (LPS). LPS Const. Travis Buckle stated, “At approximately 8:20 a.m., London Police Service personnel were called to the Dufferin Avenue and Talbot Street intersection in response to a report of a person who had fallen from the building.”
“Officers arrived on scene and located a deceased person,” he continued.
CTV News London discovered hours later that the dead was forward Abakar Kazbekov of the London Knights. Later, a statement from the team and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) confirmed the 18-year-old’s unexpected death.
Since 2021, Abakar has been a valuable member of the team, according to Knights representatives. “His teammates, friends, and family are in our thoughts and prayers.”
The Knights also declared that their Saturday afternoon matchup with the Flint Firebirds would be postponed. The Knights selected the 6′ 1″ center from Moscow, Russia with the first overall pick in the 2021 under-18 draft. He played in Friday’s victory over the Owen Sound Attack despite only playing in 21 games over the course of two seasons due to injuries.
Kazbekov was a “great kid,” according to a person who knew him, and his passing was “totally unexpected.” The LPS stated there is no suspicion of foul play and has not yet identified the deceased. “The investigation has been turned over to our Major Crime Section for additional investigation as it is still in its early stages,” stated Buckle.
